Journal of Aid-in-Dying Medicine: Spiritual Care for Patients Considering Medical Aid in Dying

Partnering with co-author Robert Drake, Empowered Endings Co-Founder and CEO Elizabeth Uslander published the article, “Spiritual Care for Patients Considering Medical Aid in Dying” in this groundbreaking medical journal. This resource is tailored to hospice and palliative care professionals who have integrated or are considering integrating Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) into their practice.

The article explains the unique role chaplains and spiritual advisors serve as the first point of contact for patients considering MAiD. For many patients, the consideration of MAiD brings long-held beliefs, values, and fears to the surface that should be explored by experienced clinical and non-clinical professionals trained in spiritual, pastoral, or end of life care.

Article Abstract:

MAiD has emerged as a rapidly developing field of medicine, increasingly grounded in the expertise of experienced providers. Just as clinical practitioners offer the medical expertise necessary to facilitate this process, chaplains and spiritual advisors provide critical spiritual and emotional support for terminally ill patients seeking control over their end of life experiences, and the loved ones supporting them.

Read the full article and explore the other insightful pieces and information in the second issue. We hope this resource helps foster understanding and compassion within the medical community regarding MAiD and the need for support beyond the patient to their family members and loved ones.
