Death Doulas

Supporting the mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of those living with a serious illness and their loved ones.

Death Doulas are changing they way people write the final chapters of their life. They walk alongside you and your loved ones during a very challenging time. Our Doulas provide companionship, comfort, and guidance when navigating a serious illness and the difficult healthcare system, planning for the end of life journey, and approaching death. With a compassionate, nonmedical approach, Doulas offer holistic support that addresses mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. They bring resources and a steady presence, helping you and your circle of care make thoughtful, informed decisions in a safe and supportive space.

An important part of the end of life journey is to have meaningful conversations that lead to greater understanding, connection, and peace of mind. Our Death Doulas foster an open environment in which to do so and are successful in helping people plan for the journey with intention and clarity. This empowers you to take charge of your decisions and define your wishes, ensuring they are honored by your loved ones when it matters most.

Constant Companions

So much of modern healthcare focuses solely on the physical body and its ailments. Empowered Endings recognizes that care—especially in complex and nuanced healthcare journeys—can have a deep impact on our mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, too. Our Doulas provide companionship, guidance, education and advocacy for our patients and all those who love and support them in their journeys.

We meet our patients and their families wherever they are and offer a variety of care options to support them in achieving the peace and ease they hope for and deserve.

Advance Care Planning

Our Doulas are trained in how to have difficult conversations about death and what the journey looks like for the entire care team. Having a guide walk you and your loved ones through the various options and plan out what the final years, months, or days will look like brings clarity and peace of mind to everyone.

Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD)

Medical Aid in Dying, or MAiD—also referred to as Death with Dignity—is a process guided by a Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) that allows competent adults with a terminal illness to receive a prescription for life-ending medication.

Empowered Endings has specialized in supporting patients and families through the MAiD process since its inception in California in 2016. We have developed not only a clear understanding of the law—which has changed at various times over the years since its legalization—but also of the nuances of the patient and family needs throughout the process and beyond.

Our Doulas are uniquely qualified to support you and your loved ones through the ingestion of MAiD and through the inevitable emotional and family needs that accompany it.

Family & Grief Counseling

Our Doulas offer compassionate, nonclinical counseling and grief support tailored to the unique needs of you and your loved ones. They provide a listening ear and emotional support, helping you process feelings of fear, loss, or uncertainty about the dying process. While not licensed therapists, they are able to refer you to additional professional resources if deeper therapeutic support is needed.

Spiritual Care

To gain clarity and peace of mind during the end of life journey, it’s important to explore your beliefs, values, and questions about the dying process. Our Doulas are trained to guide you and your family through reflective conversations, facilitate rituals, or offer mindfulness practices tailored to your spiritual and/or cultural traditions. They can also help connect you with faith leaders or resources, honor sacred practices, and ensure that your end of life wishes align with specific spiritual needs.

Legacy Work

Our Doulas also assist with legacy projects, memory sharing, and creating rituals to honor loved ones, offering a sense of purpose and meaning during this challenging time.

Bob and Elizabeth are just very gentle souls. There was no pressure and shared with my wife Rachel and I the many options you have to consider. It felt just like someone putting their arms around you.

For us as a family, Bob and Elizabeth gave us the tranquility and support that we needed at that moment. It made a total difference in the way my Dad passed away. It allowed me to be the daughter and not a nurse.
