Death Doula Education Series

Are you a death doula or looking to be one? This education series provides in-depth knowledge from experienced professionals about how you can better support others through a good death. At the heart of end-of-life care lies a deep commitment to compassion, dignity, and support for individuals and their loved ones during life’s final journey. 

The series includes five 60-minute sessions. Each one is designed to empower and equip death doulas with the knowledge, skills, and emotional resilience needed to guide and support others through the complexities of death and dying. Whether you are a healthcare professional or a caregiver, this death doula education series will help you gain the wisdom and sensitivity required to be a compassionate presence for those in this difficult transition of life.

Session 1

Demystifying Death: Insights with Death Doula Lauren Seeley

September 18, 2024, at 5 p.m. PT

In this session, you will learn about what death literacy is and bedside manner and sensitivities. In addition, you will be given resources that will equip you to have difficult conversations with patients and the community about end-of-life. You will learn how to help people feel more prepared and confident when making choices around end of life care.

Lauren Seeley is a death doula and grief doula for both humans and pets at the end of life and beyond. She is a death worker, a death literacy advocate as well as grief workshop facilitator. She is also the facilitator of the Silent Book Club Of Death Brooklyn.

 

Session 2

Learning the Medical Aspects of Death and Dying with Kacie Gikonyo

September 24, 2024, at 9 a.m. PT

This session takes a deep dive into what is happening to the body as it shuts down and begins to labor out of life. You will better understand the physiological processes that occur in the body as it approaches death and be able to recognize the common medical signs and symptoms associated with the dying process.

Kacie Gikonyo is a Death Doula, Registered Nurse, and the visionary Founder of Death Doula School. Combining the compassionate care of a death doula with the clinical expertise of a nurse, she effectively removes stress and chaos, guiding her clients through the critical next steps with calm and organization.

 

Session 3

Navigating Relationships with Clinical Team Members for Clients at the End-of-Life with Jill Schock

October 1, 2024, at 6 p.m. PT

Learn how doulas facilitate and support communication for patients and family members, build relationships with trusted clinicians, facilitate referrals, and become comfortable communicating between clients and clinicians in this session.

Jill Schock is the owner of Death Doula LA. She has over a decade of experience in end-of-life care and is a certified Clinical Chaplain, Spiritual Counselor, and Ordained Minister. She believes in empowering her clients to step away from the impositions, traditions, and negative stigma around death, and embrace personal choice and style as the chapter of life comes to an end.

 

Session 4

Facilitating Meaningful Conversations Using the Death Deck with Lisa Pahl

Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 9 a.m. PT

Facilitating conversations on end-of-life preferences is an important part of helping someone plan for their final chapter of life and requires guidance and practice. Increase your confidence in having end-of-life conversations in this session. You will identify multiple tools that can assist in facilitating discussions and best practices for when to use them.

Lisa Pahl is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with eighteen years of experience working in Hospice. Lisa is also the Co-Founder of The Death Deck and will share helpful tips on using The Death Deck and The E•O•L Deck in clinical and community settings.

 

Session 5

Embracing Spiritual Care Principles for the Grief and End-of-Life Journey with Robert Drake

Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 9 a.m. PT

This session will walk you through the primary types of grief, especially as they relate to end-of-life choices like medical aid in dying and how to utilize a foundational spiritual care principal to support your clients or loved ones. You’ll learn how to manage conversations about medical aid-in-dying and other potential areas of conflict and high emotion with family members.

Robert Drake is a spiritual care and grief counselor and ordained Interfaith Clinical Chaplain. He teaches and speaks internationally about end-of-life issues like being with dying and death, medical aid-in-dying, restorative justice, trauma, and forgiveness.
